Sélectifs du recaptage de la sérotonine (Isrs), comme les autres antidépresseurs, peuvent parfois causer ou d'activer la manie ou d'hypomanie. L'incidence variait de 0,1% à 2% dans les études de pré-commercialisation de tests de plusieurs Isrs. Les Patients atteints de trouble bipolaire sont généralement plus susceptibles de faire l'expérience de la manie d'antidépresseurs. La thérapie avec les Isrs doit être administré avec prudence chez les patients présentant des antécédents de manie ou de trouble bipolaire. Avant de commencer le traitement, il est recommandé de manière adéquate des patients à l'écran pour le trouble bipolaire, y compris les antécédents familiaux de suicide, de trouble bipolaire et la dépression.
