Les corticostéroïdes peut provoquer une hypernatrémie, l'hypokaliémie, la rétention d'eau, et de l'élévation de la pression artérielle. Ces effets minéralocorticoïdes sont les plus importantes à la fludrocortisone, suivie par l'hydrocortisone et de la cortisone, puis par la prednisone et la prednisolone. Le reste des corticostéroïdes, de la bétaméthasone, la dexaméthasone, la méthylprednisolone, et la triamcinolone, ont peu de minéralocorticoïdes activités. Toutefois, de fortes doses de corticostéroïdes peut démontrer ces effets, en particulier si elle est donnée pour plus de temps que de brèves périodes. Le traitement avec des corticostéroïdes doit être administré avec prudence chez les patients souffrant déjà de la rétention de fluide, d'hypertension, d'insuffisance cardiaque et/ou rénale. Le sodium alimentaire, de restriction et de supplémentation en potassium peut être conseillé.
