Lors de l'administration d'œstrogènes et/ou de progestatif la thérapie chez les patients atteints de troubles de la thyroïde, les cliniciens doivent être conscients que ces hormones peuvent affecter les tests de la fonction thyroïdienne. Les modifications ont pour la plupart été signalés avec l'utilisation de contraceptifs oraux combinés. Plus précisément, de la thyroïde-binding globulin (TBG) peut être augmenté, entraînant une hausse circulant total de l'hormone de la thyroïde, telle que mesurée par le PBI (iode protéique), T4 par colonne ou de dosage radio-immunologique, ou T3 par dosage radio-immunologique. T3 libre résine absorption peut être diminué. Au contraire, une diminution de la TBG et, par conséquent, la thyroxine, la concentration, a été signalé par les fabricants de la base de progestatif seulement (norethindrone) les contraceptifs oraux.
