Les corticostéroïdes peut provoquer des gastro-intestinale perforation et d'hémorragie, généralement lorsqu'ils sont administrés à des doses élevées ou pendant des périodes prolongées. Ils peuvent également masquer les symptômes de complications comme une péritonite ou un sepsis intra-abdominal. Le traitement avec des corticostéroïdes doivent être évitées ou administré avec prudence chez les patients souffrant de diverticulite, la colite ulcéreuse non spécifique (si il y a un risque imminent de perforation, abcès, ou de toute autre infection pyogène), ou de la récente anastomoses intestinales récentes.
