Les benzodiazépines ont le potentiel de causer une dépendance et d'abus. La tolérance ainsi qu'une dépendance physique et psychologique peuvent se développer, en particulier après une utilisation prolongée et/ou à des doses excessives. Cependant, l'arrêt brutal suite à une utilisation continuelle d'aussi peu que 6 semaines à des niveaux thérapeutiques a parfois précipité les symptômes de sevrage. La dépendance sujettes à des personnes, tels que ceux avec des antécédents d'abus d'alcool ou l'abus de substance, devraient être l'objet d'une stricte surveillance lorsqu'ils sont traités par des benzodiazépines. Il peut être prudent de s'abstenir de la distribution de grandes quantités de médicaments pour ces patients. Après une utilisation prolongée ou si la dépendance est suspectée, le retrait d'un traitement aux benzodiazépines doit être entrepris progressivement à l'aide d'un dosage de programme effilant. Si les symptômes de sevrage se produisent, temporaire reprise de benzodiazépines peut être nécessaire.
